Information transfer and communication technologies processed by computer systems are indispensable for our modern life. Informatics tools are commonly used to solve management problems and decision processes. Especially, the management of environmental systems can only be done by regarding the socio-economic development of nations. Therefore, the information exchange within an enlarged European Union plays an important role for a sustainable development as well as for environmental resource management and protection.
This is the general topic of the 17th International Conference Informatics for Environmental Protection ENVIROINFO COTTBUS 2003. The conference brings together people from the scientific community, public administration and business organisations that develop or use informatic tools in the field of environmental management. The aim of this conference is to document the State-of-the-Art in environmental informatics within an enlarged Europe as well as fostering the dialogue between theory and practice. The conference book contains key notes and papers as well as poster papers. Because of the complexity of environmental systems including time and space dependent natural successions and anthropogenic activities, a great variety of subject areas such as informatics, mathematics, statistics, ecology, geology, geography, logistics and others must therefore be covered by environmental informatics.
During the last two decades environmental informatics has become an increasing interdisciplinary interest. Especially for environmental management modelling and simulation, decision support systems, environmental information systems and geographical information systems are attractive areas of application. On the other hand, scientists working in the field of environmental informatics have to understand environmental systems in the context of natural resource availability and sustainable development as well as socio-economics. Therefore, environmental informatics must contribute to a sustainable resource management, to protect nature and to support biodiversity for our survival on earth.
